Oil & Gas / Offshore

Some of the most demanding environments in the world.

The Oil & Gas industry brings together some of the most technically complex challenges in industrial engineering. Offshore oil platforms, FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offloading units), fixed jackets, subsea wellheads, LNG terminals — each installation combines absolute functional safety requirements, extreme operating conditions (marine corrosion, vibrations, explosive atmospheres) and one of the most stringent regulatory frameworks in existence.

AUTOM Technologies has been active in this sector for over 15 years, in France and internationally. Our engineers hold BOSIET qualifications and are experienced in intervention protocols at classified offshore sites. We understand the safety culture of the oil industry — its procedures, documentary requirements and operational availability imperatives.

How we operate

Control systems for offshore equipment and processes

We design and develop control systems for critical offshore equipment: gas/liquid separators, compressors, lift pumps, produced effluent treatment systems and onboard power management. Our architectures incorporate redundancy requirements (1oo2 and 2oo3 topologies), fail-safe logic and service continuity requirements specific to marine installations. Each development is documented from functional analysis through to FAT/SAT acceptance procedures, in accordance with the operator’s standards.

Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS / ESD / RPS)

Functional safety is central to our offshore operations. We design and integrate Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) compliant with IEC 61511: determining Safety Integrity Levels (SIL 1 to SIL 3), calculating Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD), documenting safety loops and validating architecture. Our RPS (Riser Protection Systems) and ESD (Emergency Shutdown) systems protect transfer lines and critical equipment against loss-of-containment scenarios.

Programming and integration in ATEX zones

Our engineers work directly on platforms and floating units for PLC programming, commissioning and ongoing maintenance. We strictly comply with PTW (Permit to Work) procedures, multi-level electrical isolation and the HSE protocols of oil operators. Our teams are qualified for interventions in ATEX zones (Zone 0, 1 and 2) and trained in offshore emergency procedures (BOSIET/HUET).

Real-time production data acquisition

We deploy embedded data acquisition and transmission systems for real-time monitoring of critical parameters: pressure, temperature, flow rate, vibrations, gas and H₂S detection. Data is consolidated in historians (OSIsoft PI, AVEVA Historian) and transmitted to onshore SCADA systems via redundant links. Our communication architectures comply with IEC 62443 cybersecurity requirements, with IT/OT segmentation and encryption of critical data flows.

Standards and qualifications

  • ATEX (Directive 2014/34/EU) — Design and integration of equipment for explosive atmosphere zones (Zone 0, 1 and 2)
  • IEC 61511 — Functional safety of safety instrumented systems for the process industry (SIL classification)
  • IEC 62443 — Cybersecurity of industrial automation and control systems
  • API RP 14C / NORSOK I-005 — Safety requirements for offshore control systems
  • IEC 61508 — Functional safety of programmable electronic safety-related systems
  • BOSIET / GWO BST — Offshore qualifications for our field engineers

Representative projects

RPS systems on offshore installations

Development and integration of RPS (Riser Protection System) systems on several offshore oil installations. Programming on redundant Siemens S7-400H PLCs, on-site commissioning, IEC 61511 certification. Management of ESD inter-equipment communications and interfaces with platform DCS systems. All interventions performed in ATEX zones in strict compliance with the operator’s PTW procedures.

FPSO — Supervision and production data acquisition

Deployment of an embedded production data acquisition and transmission system on an FPSO unit. Integration with onshore SCADA via redundant links. Real-time processing of critical parameters: oil/gas/water flow rates, line pressures, energy balances, separation efficiency. IEC 62443-compliant architecture with IT/OT segmentation.

Oil terminal — Full control system and supervision

Complete development of the SCADA supervision system (AVEVA System Platform) and control system (Siemens S7-1500) for an oil storage terminal in France. Management of 12 storage tanks, road and rail loading/unloading stations, fire-fighting systems and hydrocarbon effluent collection networks.
