Case Studies — Flagship Projects

🚇 TELT-LTF — TBM FEDERICA Tunnel Boring Machine (Lyon-Turin)

Context: As part of the Lyon-Turin cross-border rail project, AUTOM Technologies designed and integrated the control system for tunnel boring machine TBM FEDERICA, responsible for excavating 2 km of underground gallery through mountainous terrain.

Technical challenge: Real-time coordination of over 300 I/O signals, critical alarm management in an underground ATEX environment, interfaces with ventilation, conveyor and rock-bolting subsystems. Maximum availability was mandatory — any unplanned stop directly impacted project deadlines.

AUTOM solution: Redundant Siemens S7-1500 architecture, WinCC Unified SCADA, full project scope from functional specification to on-site commissioning. Deliverables: functional analysis, PLC programming, HMI configuration, factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).

🛢️ FPSO Kaombo / Egina / Pazflor — Offshore Oil & Gas

Context: Interventions on three deepwater FPSOs (Angola, Nigeria, Congo). These floating production, storage and offloading units require SIL-2 certified safety instrumented systems for fire, gas and overpressure protection.

Technical challenge: ATEX Zone 1 environment, 24/7 availability, offshore interventions requiring BOSIET certification. Development and validation of Riser Protection Systems (RPS) compliant with IEC 61511, with stringent documentation requirements imposed by TotalEnergies.

AUTOM solution: Design, development, integration and FAT of RPS systems on Triconex and Siemens S7-400H safety PLCs. Technical assistance during installation and offshore operations. Outcome: zero non-conformities during SIL certification audits.

🚢 Maritime IoT — Fleet of 200 Connected Vessels

Context: Deployment of an industrial IoT solution across a fleet of 200 merchant vessels and marine construction ships. The objective: centralise engine, auxiliary and cargo data to optimise predictive maintenance and reduce fuel consumption.

Technical challenge: Heterogeneous on-board equipment (PLCs from various manufacturers and generations), intermittent satellite connectivity, near-real-time data synchronisation, cybersecurity for onboard communications compliant with BIMCO and DNV GL guidelines.

AUTOM solution: IIoT architecture based on OPC-UA, MQTT and InfluxDB. Embedded gateways on each vessel, data aggregation on a supervised cloud portal. Custom Grafana dashboards per fleet segment. Outcome: 12% reduction in unplanned incidents and 8% fuel saving across the fleet.
